Downhill skiing isn’t the only way to experience the winter wonderland of Stowe, Vermont. For those who enjoy the mountain lifestyle—days spent in the snow and afternoons spent sipping hot cider by a fireplace—but prefer to skip the lift lines, here are several must-try adventures for your next retreat.
Cross-Country Skiing
Adventure seekers who love the feeling of being on skis, albeit without the incline, seek out cross-country skiing. No one said it’s easy, but gliding through Stowe’s beautiful alpine landscape—with no crowds—makes it more than worth it. The Nordic Barn at Topnotch Resort beckons cross-country skiers with 15km of groomed trails for experts as well as beginners. Equipment can also be easily rented on-site.
Snowmobiling
Satisfy your inner thrill-seeker while racing through the fields and trees on a snowmobile. You will find tours for the beginning and the advanced through varying terrain in Mount Mansfield State Forrest. Snowmobile Tours offers the newest equipment and gear creating the best quality experience.
Snowshoeing
Head off on one of the many diverse trails Stowe has to offer for a great workout, and for scenic views over Stowe. Anyone can snowshoe, and that is the beauty of it. All you have to do is strap on the lightweight snowshoes, and start walking. The Green Mountain Club is a great resource to figure out what trails are best for your experience level. Moonlight snowshoe tours give the trails a silver glow, and are available through Umiak Outdoors Outfitters.
Dog Sledding
There is something magical about racing through snow with a team of eager dogs leading the way. There are a handful of places that offer the unforgettable adventure of dog sledding. Most companies provide different length trips including a quick 20-minute ride, or a longer 2-hour trip. We like Peace Pups Dogsledding and October Siberians Sled Dog Adventures.
Ice Fishing
If you feel the itch to bait and hook in the dead of winter, you’ve found the perfect place to do so. Ice fishing excursions come with full instruction on everything you need to know to secure your big catch. For a chance to catch a Lake Trout or Northern Pike, try Fly Rod Shop-Ice Fishing tours or Catamount Fishing Adventures.
