The calm, crystal clear waters of Anguilla have a special appeal, but this British overseas territory is still somewhat of a secret compared to more popular Caribbean destinations.
This season, Tradewind Aviation is pleased to offer both scheduled service flights and private charters to Anguilla. Board one of Tradewind’s Swiss-built Pilatus PC-12s in San Juan (SJU), Antigua (ANU), or St. Barths (SBH) for a short transfer to Clayton J. Lloyd Airport (AXA).
Any worries will melt away the second you step foot on the soft white sands of one of Anguilla’s beaches. The best one, Maundays Bay, is well worth the trip. This half moon stretch of white sand is located on the western end of the island. Maundays Bay is the ideal destination for snorkeling, enjoying fresh seafood, or simply sunbathing under the Caribbean sun. Here’s our complete guide to enjoying this hidden gem.
Where to Stay
Maundays Bay is technically a public beach, but most of its visitors—and biggest fans—are guests of Belmond Cap Juluca. Staying at this Belmond-owned property is the most luxurious way to experience Maundays Bay. A favorite among the jet set, this property was acquired in 2017, closed for a revamp, and almost completely destroyed by Hurricane Irma shortly thereafter. The revamp turned into a $121-million, top-to-bottom renovation. However, Belmond Cap Juluca has been back and better than ever since it reopened in 2019.
Its domed white Greco-Moorish buildings give way to airy interiors and what’s certainly one of the best infinity pools on the island. But the beach is the real draw here, as the hotel sits directly on Maundays Bay, and Cap Juluca’s legendary service extends beyond the walls of the property. Each guest room comes with two chaise lounges, umbrellas, and a beachside beverage. Meal services, chilled waters, cold towels, and fresh sorbets are served throughout the day. Four beachside cabana bars ensure you’ll never go hungry or thirsty while spending a long day enjoying the sun.
Where to Eat
Those who don’t stay at Belmond Cap Juluca (the Four Seasons Anguilla and Malliouhana are also excellent options) should still make a pilgrimage to the hotel for a meal or drink at one of its four restaurants. For a casual beachside meal, opt for The Cap Shack, located on the sands of Maundays Bay. Creative cocktails flow freely, and the menu has crowd-pleasing favorites such as conch tacos, poke bowls, and the mahi-mahi burger. For a special occasion, the legendary Pimms is one of the island’s best options. A romantic hideaway with water views, Pimms opened in 1988 and specializes in Anguillan fare and contemporary Caribbean specialties.
Also at Belmond Cap Juluca are Peruvian standout Uchu and Cip’s by Cipriani, an outpost of the hotel’s sister property Hotel Cipriani in Venice, both excellent options for lunch or dinner.
What to Do
Visitors will find no shortage of beach activities to fill a day at Maundays Bay. Its protected location means the water is exceptionally clear and calm, making it one of the island’s best destinations for swimming, snorkeling, diving, or water skiing, all of which can be arranged by Cap Juluca for guests. On breezier days, the bay also makes an excellent spot for windsurfing.
Those who aren’t guests of the hotel can rent water equipment from one of the island’s many outfitters and take advantage of the free public parking at Belmond Cap Juluca, a little-known island secret. Whether it’s for a stay, a meal, or simply a walk in the sand, Maundays Bay is a must-visit destination for any visitor to Anguilla.
